Local Lore: A winter expedition in Yellowstone

Posted

In the winter of 1955, Bob Richard — then a senior in high school—joined his photographer father, Jack Richard, for an adventure into Yellowstone National Park via snowplane.

That trip is the subject of Bob’s next free “Local Lore” presentation, “A Winter Expedition through Yellowstone.” The talk, illustrated by the black-and-white photos taken by Jack Richard and the color photos taken by Bob, takes place in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West’s Coe Auditorium on Thursday, March 21 at noon.

Jack Richard organized the weeklong excursion, undertaken with aircraft-on-skis called snowplanes, which also included Larry Morrison, then-editor of the Cody Enterprise, and three Wyoming Game & Fish Department wardens (James White of Jackson, Dale West of Moran, and “Red” Wilkerson of Big Piney).

Starting from Jackson, the group toured Yellowstone’s south loop photographing the scenery and animals in the Park. The trip took them from the south entrance to Old Faithful (where they met District Ranger Bob Murphy), on to Madison Junction and Norris, over to the Canyon and Lake areas, and then back out the south entrance.

The “Local Lore with Bob Richard” series is hosted and coordinated by the Center’s McCracken Research Library and takes place every other month. For 2024, remaining program dates (subject to change) include May 16, July 18, Sept. 12, Nov. 21, and Dec. 19.
