Though the filing period doesn’t close until Friday, most local races are already contested.
No Democrats have filed for any local partisan offices, but the Republican primary is looking busy.
Legislature
As of Wednesday afternoon, freshman Rep. Dalton Banks (R-Cowley) of House District 26 was the only local lawmaker to not have an opponent for the GOP primary.
For example, longtime Rep. David Northrup (R-Powell) is being challenged by longtime auto service technician Paul Hoeft in House District 25.
Then in House District 50, Rep. Rachel Rodriguez-Williams (R-Cody) faces a challenge from Cody attorney David Hill. Carrie Satterwhite of Ralston, who ran for the position as a Libertarian in 2022, initially filed to run as a Republican this time around, but withdrew her candidacy on Tuesday.
Over in House District 24, Cody Mayor Matt Hall is squaring off with Wyoming Republican Party National Committeewoman Nina Webber, who ran for the 24 seat in 2020 and 2022. They’re both seeking to replace Rep. Sandy Newsome (R-Cody), who’s exiting after three terms.
And down in House District 28, Rep. John Winter (R-Thermopolis) faces former Hot Springs State Park Superintendent Kevin Skates.
In the Senate, former Cody City Councilman Landor Greer is challenging Sen. Tim French (R-Powell) in district 18, and Tom Olmstead of Basin is vying to replace Sen. Ed Cooper (R-Ten Sleep) in district 20.
Commission
Meanwhile, four Republicans have filed for two available seats on the Park County Commission: incumbent Commissioner Scott Mangold of Powell and Cody business owners Casey Edwards, Karin Richard and Tanner Beemer.
Powell City Council
Filings have been slower for the Powell City Council. Former Powell police officer and construction business owner Kade Richmond announced that he’s running for mayor against incumbent John Wetzel, but no other office had drawn more than one candidate as of Wednesday.
Councilman Floyd Young filed for reelection in Ward 2 and Councilman Geoff Hovivian filed in Ward 1, but Ward 3 Councilwoman Lesli Spencer had not filed as of press time. Troy Bray, who ran for HD 25 in 2022, is seeking to replace Spencer in Ward 3.
Candidates for municipal and partisan offices have until 5 p.m. Friday to file.
