Lady Panthers pick up road wins

Rally over Jackson, dominate PinedaleThe Powell High School girls' basketball team rallied from a double-digit second-half deficit to beat Jackson 51-42 on Friday night. They followed it up with a 41-21 Saturday win at Pinedale.

“It's always nice to go on the road and win two games, especially after a long bus trip,” said PHS head Coach Luke Danforth.

Against Jackson, PHS (13-3 overall, 7-2 in Class 3A West) found itself down 11 points in the third quarter.

Keyed by a 3-point bucket from senior Katie Kipp, the Lady Panthers got a comeback rolling, Danforth said, and, “Everybody chipped in from there.”

Powell closed the third down by just three, 38-35, and in the fourth quarter, the Lady Panthers finally seized the lead.

Jackson had led 18-12 at the end of the first quarter and 29-20 at the half.

“We hit some nice shots during the fourth and then Hannah (Pollart) and Savannah (Donarski) iced it with some nice free-throw shooting,” said Coach Danforth.

PHS made eight of nine attempts from the free throw line in the fourth period to beat Jackson (9-8 overall, 5-4 in conference play).

Pollart led all scorers with 23 points. Donarski followed with 11, and Leslie Thronburg added 10. Also scoring were Kipp (5) and Rogers (2).

The Lady Panthers outscored the Lady Broncs 31-15 in the second half, limiting JHS to just five field goals.

“Obviously, our defense stepped up,” said Danforth, adding, “As the game went on, we just got more confident, I thought.”

He said the comeback win was “a testament to the girls' attitude and refuse-to-give-up approach.”

Things were less harrowing against Pinedale (4-12, 1-8) on Saturday.

The Lady Panthers jumped out to a 14-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, taking a 41-21 decision.

Danforth said he was particularly pleased with his squad's defensive effort, holding Pinedale to under 25 percent shooting.

Eight PHS players — Pollart (10), Rogers (9), Thronburg (6), Donarski and Kipp (5 each), and Kami Cooley, Shellie Williams and Kendra Ostrom (2 each) — scored in the contest.

This weekend, the Lady Panthers will stay home. On Friday they'll host the Lady Eagles of Lyman (4-12, 0-9) in a 5:45 p.m. matchup.

“They've been playing a lot of teams close,” said Danforth.

Saturday should bring a stiff challenge from the Mountain View Lady Buffaloes — who, with a matching 7-2 conference record, are tied with Powell atop Class 3A West. Tip-off time is 12:45 p.m.
