JV girls rebound with two wins

Two tests saw the Powell Panther girls’ junior varsity team come out on top with two wins, defeating Worland 36-27 and Buffalo 44-37 to move to 11-3 on the season.

In Worland on Friday the Panthers were in a close battle throughout, up 10-9 after the first before leading 20-15 at halftime to help create space between the teams.

Powell then finished the game by allowing only one point over the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter to finish with the 36-27 win.

Ivy Agee led with 11 points, Emery Hernandez had 10, Hali Hancock had six, Leah Graham had five while Shelby Zickefoose and Neveah Garcia each had two.

At home against Buffalo on Saturday the Panthers had to adjust due to playing without Hernandez due to there being three competition levels and Hernandez slated to use up all her allotted quarters playing freshman and varsity level.

“Everyone had to step up in new roles to a degree and across the board they answered that challenge from the opening tip,” coach Troy Hildebrand said.

Powell used those new roles to jump out to a strong start and take a 21-8 lead after the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Panthers kept pushing and made it a significant lead at the half up 32-16.

In the third quarter the Panthers were without Agee due to quarters restrictions, but held Buffalo low in scoring at the defensive end to take a 34-22 lead into the fourth quarter.

Buffalo cut the lead to nine early in the fourth but the Panthers were able to hold off the visitors for a 44-37 win.

“This was a win that our entire JV team should be extremely proud of and it took contributions from all nine players that suited up to get that accomplished,” Hildebrand said.

Agee led with 14, Hancock had eight, Zickefoose, Neveah Garcia and Graham each had six while Melanie Garcia and Kate Mainwaring each had two.

Powell will continue its homestand this Friday and Saturday, with the JV taking on Lyman at 4 p.m. Friday and Mountain View at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The JV boys games will be tipping off at the same time both days.
