Teams bring home 30 medals

The second year of indoor track is in the books for the Powell Panthers, as the team brought home 30 medals in addition to 31 personal bests as the girls placed eighth and the boys finished 11th in Gillette on Friday and Saturday.

Leading the way with the highest finish individually was Kinley Cooley, who improved her school record time in the 3200 to 12:06.72 and brought home second in the race.

She also had a top finish in the 1600 meters, finishing fourth with another school record time of 5:31.02.

Just behind in terms of placement was Katie O’Brien, who finished third in the shot put with a throw of 36-8.

Kinley’s little sister, Karee Cooley, finished fifth in the 3200 meters with a 12:29.94, Kenna Jacobsen finished sixth in the 800 meters with a 2:28.14, Brynn Hillman placed seventh in the 3200 with a 12:57.09 and Myah Rakness finished ninth in the 3200 meters with a 13:15.92 as the final individual top 10 finisher for the Panther girls.

“I was very impressed with how much our distance cut their times,” coach Scott Smith said. “I really attribute it to the hard work they put in, both in-season and between the cross country and indoor season, along with the great coaching they received from coach (Tracy) McArthur.”

In the 4x800, the Cooleys, Hillman and Jacobsen had a runner-up finish, placing with a 10:39.96.

The 1600 sprint medley team of Ashlee Jacobsen, Aramonie Brinkerhoff, Audrey Johnson and Kenna Jacobsen finished fifth (4:38.83) and the 4x400 of Ashlee Jacobsen, Rakness, Melissa Merritt and Johnson finished eighth (4:36.88).

On the boys’ side, Stuart Shoopman had the highest individual finish for the Panthers, taking fourth in the 55 meter hurdles with an 8.34. Lincoln Crawford just missed finals in 10th with a 9.31, but was the highest placing freshman in 3A or 4A as the 3A finals featured all seniors.

Tevon Schultz brought home a medal in the triple jump, leaping 38-5 1/2 for sixth place and improving his personal best this year by over 3 feet from his best mark coming into the season.

A pair of eighth place finishes came from Liam Taylor in the 800 meters (2:05.92) and Sondre Furuhaug in the triple jump (38-0).

“I really am looking forward to watching Liam this spring,” Smith said. “Not only did he turn in a 2:05 in the open 800, but he also did it in his split of the 4x800, so I think we are going to see even greater things this spring from him.”

In the relays the Panthers placed fifth in the 1600 sprint medley (3:52.03) with the team of Shoopman, Furuhaug, Taylor and Chance Franks.

The other top finish in the relays was a sixth place finish in the 4x200 relay (1:39.47) from the team of Franks, Furuhaug, Shoopman and Schultz.

“Overall, I was really pleased with our kids’ performances,” Smith said.

After wrapping up the indoor season, athletes will likely transition either into outdoor track or soccer, which started on Monday, March 4.

“They are all going to be in much better physical condition starting their seasons,” Smith said. “Track puts you in situations where you really learn how to compete because of the individual nature of the sport which will carry on not only this spring, but throughout their lives.”
