Patriotism prevailed during the Clark community’s In Their Shoes honor program on Saturday, Sept. 10, with a salute to all responders and civilians who died as a result of the attack against the United States by al-Qaeda on Sept. 11, 2001.

On Saturday, U.S. military veterans, Clark Volunteer Fire Department firefighters and first responders were especially applauded. As well, appreciation was expressed to the Cody-based Downrange Warriors group and the Clark Pioneer Recreation Center, which assists those in need. It served as the base for events.

Community members gathered at the finish line of the 17-mile Canyon Run as U.S. Marine Corps veterans Nicholas Hernandez and Gunner Hill finished together in second place while carrying the U.S. Marine Corps flag.

The run had special meaning for Therese Antieri, overall race winner, who also was met at the finish. She ran in memory of her veteran husband, Sal, while packing 85 pounds on her back the last mile. Her husband, who died last year, was a U.S Army Special Forces Green Beret who served in Vietnam. 

“I want to express my thanks, as the event meant a lot to me and to so many in this community,” she said.

As people entered Clark on Saturday, they passed by a line of signs with names of Clark area veterans, first responders and law enforcement officers. Kristen Adkins, coordinator for In Their Shoes events, said, “It was a sight that many said brought tears.”

Adkins noted that the event was “an astounding success with attendees from hundreds of miles away and at least two other states.” Although the exact total isn’t in yet, she added, “we raised around $8,000 that will be split between our three worthy organizations, Downrange Warriors, the Clark Volunteer Fire Department and the Clark Pioneer Rec Center.”

“‘I would like to personally thank every volunteer, donor and spectator,” she said. “We appreciate all for coming to Clark to honor those who give so much to our community and country.”
