An early season road trip led to mixed results as the Cubs girls’ track teams set off to Riverton on Saturday. The eighth grade girls came away with a second place finish and the seventh graders placed sixth as they look for continued improvement in the early season.

Top performers for the seventh grade team included Karee Cooley, who took second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:10.11 and second in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:55.59. Maddie Valdez placed third in the shot put with a throw of 23 feet, 1 1/2 inches, and fourth in the discus with a throw of 55 feet, 9 inches. Ashlee Jacobsen took fourth in the high jump clearing 4 feet, 4 inches and fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:12.95. Montana Mixon placed fifth in the 200 meter hurdles with a time of 37.12 seconds.

The lone individual winner for the eighth grade girls came from Hali Hancock, who won the high jump after clearing 4 feet, 6 inches.

The relay team of Audrey Johnson, Nalani Jordan, Melissa Merritt and Josie Werner won the 4x400 with a time of 4:48.93.

Other top performers for the eighth grade girls included Johnson, who placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:04.66. Merritt placed second in the 800 meters with a time of 2:52.02 and third in the 1600 meters with a time of 6:16.12; Kadence Knuth placed third in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 10 inches; Jordan placed second in the triple jump with a jump of 28 feet, 6 inches; Anai Torres placed second in the shot put with a throw of 28 feet, 9 inches.

With a Tuesday meet being canceled, Cubs coach Zach Coombs is hoping that his team will be able to recover for the final three weeks of the season.

“Right now we are pretty beat up,” Coombs said. “We are dealing with a lot of injuries so this break comes as a blessing to rest kids and get them healthy for the last three weeks of the year.”

The Cubs will take to the track again on Saturday, April 23, in Cody at 9:30 a.m.
