Girls track runs away with first meet

An opening meet filled with good weather and top performances helped propel the Panther girls’ track team to an opening meet team win. The Powell High School girls came away with six individual event winners and a relay team win, piling up 229.70 points to finish nearly 90 points ahead of runner-up Worland.

Individual event winners for Powell included: senior Jenna Hillman in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.78; junior Anna Bartholomew in the 400 with a time of 1:04.15; junior Megan Jacobsen in the 800 with a time of 2:34.97; sophomore Lauryn Bennett in the pole vault with a height of 8 feet, 6 inches; junior Sydney Spomer in the triple jump with a leap of 31 feet, 11 inches; and senior Reagan Thompson in the shot put with a throw of 33 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

The relay team of Bartholomew, Jenna Hillman, Jacobsen and sophomore Waycee Harvey won the 4x400 relay with a state qualifying time of 4:20.12; Harvey and Hillman also both qualified for state in the 100.

Panther track head coach Scott Smith said the team is still trying to figure out a majority of their relay teams, as they sometimes don’t put their top runners on the relays in order to give them more flexibility in open events.

Other top three finishers for the Panthers included: freshman Kenna Jacobsen, who placed second in the 800 just behind her sister and second in the pole vault; Brynn Hillman placed second in both the 1600 and 3200 in personal record times; senior Abi Urbach placed second in the 100 hurdles; junior Grace Coombs placed second in the discus; Harvey placed third in both the 100 and long jump; freshman Kinley Cooley placed third in the 3200; Bennett placed third in the 100 hurdles; junior Gretel Opps placed third in the 300 hurdles; sophomore Kenzie Ratcliff placed third in the high jump; freshman Caitlynn Floy placed third in the triple jump; and sophomore Katie O’Brien placed third in the shot put.

The Panthers will head back on the road this week, as they will head to Buffalo on Saturday to compete against top Class 3A East teams Buffalo and Douglas, plus 4A competition from Gillette, Sheridan and Casper.

“The kids should feel good about their performances and be looking forward to a big test this week in Buffalo,” Smith said.
