Girls’ swim camp starts next week

Summer swimming action is in full swing and the Powell Panther girls’ swim team will be hosting a camp starting next week at the Powell Aquatic Center.

The first week of camp will kick off on Monday, running from July 22-26, while the second week of action will be Monday, July 29 through Friday, Aug. 2.

Camp will begin every day at 9 a.m. and will run until noon.

“Swim camp is very beneficial in helping us prepare for the high school season,” coach Bob Smartt said. “We will put major emphasis on stroke mechanics. Biomechanists tell us that the best time to make positive changes to swim strokes is early in the training cycle.”

Smartt said that the girls’ swim team is looking for additional members to join the team in the fall after losing 10 seniors to graduation last season.

The second week of camp there will also be a diving camp in the evenings from 5-8 p.m. with Smartt noting the team is also looking for divers after graduating two of their three divers a year ago.

“Coach Heather (Christensen) would love to see some new athletes willing to give diving a try,” Smartt said. “Contrary to many other swim teams, we do not require our divers to participate in swimming events.”

Smartt said that even though it is called the Panther girls’ swim camp, boys are welcome to attend as well.

He added that athletes may pay half of the $60 if they are unable to make it to half of the camp sessions, with the team also willing to pay for half or full scholarships for athletes to attend.
