Girls’ soccer hopes to continue building

First game Saturday postponed

After an improved 2022 campaign, the Powell High School girls’ soccer team will hope to continue growing in the 2023 season — this time under new leadership.

Danny Agee took over the Panthers’ head coaching position in July, following the resignation of former coach Kaitlin Loeffen.

Heading into this season, the Panthers return a lot of talent from last year’s team, while adding a new group from the Powell Middle School program that’s hoping to make an immediate impact.

Powell returns eight players with varsity experience from last season. The returners include those who scored nine of the team’s 10 goals last year, with the exception being Kabrie Cannon, who was lost to graduation.

This year’s squad will be a little smaller than last year’s, featuring 18 players on the roster.

The PHS girls posted four victories during their 2022 campaign, which quadrupled their win total from the prior year. Heading into this campaign, the team hopes to continue to grow a young roster towards securing the program’s first state tournament berth since 2017.

“I think the one thing that [assistant coach Callee Erickson] and I are trying to build is a good team atmosphere where everyone relies on their teammates to help them be stronger,” coach Agee said. “As the year goes on, our objective is just to play quality team soccer and build the intensity as we go through the season.”

One notable absence for the Panthers will be in the net, with goalkeeper Taylor SanFilippo opting not to return this season. Agee is still determining who will fill that role this season.

“It’s still a work in progress,” he said Tuesday. “I always joke that I will play without a keeper, but I guess we will see how serious I am in a couple of weeks.”

Powell was scheduled to open the season Saturday and take on Pinedale, but those games have been postponed.

That will give the Panthers an extra week to get situated before their first game and it could prove helpful; on an already small roster, players have missed various amounts of time due to spring break and state basketball.

The first action for Powell is now set for next Friday and Saturday, March 24 and 25, at a tournament in Worland.

“We are very thankful we have the [upcoming weekend] off because we were missing so many players last week and then players this week,” Agee said. “We will be able to get a solid three to four days in of training with the full roster, which will be a blessing before going down to Worland.”

Meanwhile, the matchup with Pinedale has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 30 — followed by Mountain View on Friday, March 31 and Lyman on Saturday, April 1.
