For the love of running

On the third Thursday of every month it’s not uncommon to see a group of runners trotting through Powell’s friendly neighborhoods. That would be Run Dauntless.

The runners are part of a new club started about a year ago, inspired by Club Dauntless in Cody who has a similar group.

It’s for anyone and everyone who wants to run, according to Rinda Eastman, a certified running coach and personal trainer at Club Dauntless.

“It’s for whoever wants to join,” Eastman said.

The club is an opportunity to get together and socialize, member Marcie Hobbs said.

“It encourages people within the community because there are a lot of people in the community who like to get out, walk, jog … to come and out and be part of something, be part of what Powell has to offer,” Hobbs added.

The group is not training for one race or goal, rather simply group training in several forms. Cody resident Olivia Ximenes, who attends the Powell club, is training for a triathlon in Boulder, Colorado this August.

“We all have something we’re all training for that involves a run,” Ximenes said.

Eastman and member Molly Zeller were training for the Queen Bee Montana Marathon on May 18 in Billings at the time of the interview. Eastman was set to run the half marathon and Zeller the full 26.2-mile marathon.

“I’ve been wanting to do it for a long time and actually … it finally worked out this year,” Eastman said.

It’s good to be able to support local clubs and races, she said, also mentioning Run Cody Wy and organizer Janie Curtis.

The Cody Beer Mile, the MAC and Buffalo Bill Cody Races will all be taking place under Run Cody Wy’s banner. Rinda plans to run the Buffalo Bill Cody Races in September, and has run the races for several years, she said.

Her favorite area race is the Bighorn Trail Run, which was the first race she ever trained runners for competition. Since then she has run the 30km, 50km and 50 mile variation of the race. Locally she likes to run the Hunt and the MAC.

“I like trail running just because of the technicality of it,” she said. “It’s not just a road that you’re on, there’s something about trail running that makes you feel free … You’ve got uphill and downhill and just all kinds of different [factors] that you have to take into consideration,” Eastman said.

For those just starting out,  Eastman recommends finding a local running club even if you don’t run the whole way, or at all.

“That’s why we do the running club with like minded people that love to kind of be fit,” Eastman said. “I always say just start talking to people and even if you walk maybe 1 mile of walking will eventually turn into 1 mile of running.”
