Powell’s Future Farmers of America celebrated a successful school year May 6 during the End of The Year FFA Banquet.

At the state convention in April, Powell student Robert Gonzales placed 10th overall, Garrett Tharp earned the high score in structures, Baylee Brence placed fifth in vet science and 10th in agronomy, Aramonie Brinkerhoff placed 12th in agronomy,  Weston Reynolds placed fifth in ag mechanics, and Katie Morrison placed 13th in livestock. The chapter was awarded the Silver Emblem Chapter Award and Outstanding Chapter Model of Innovation Growing Leaders. The agronomy team placed third, farm business management placed fifth, environment and natural resources placed sixth, ag mechanics placed 10th and vet science placed 13th. Wyatt Blackmore earned Silver Proficiency at the FFA State Convention for his agriculture processing supervised agriculture experience.

“I thought it was a really good year for community service and obviously, we did pretty good at state where we got Two Star Chapter [an award given for having a quality Program of Activities] and then we had the fifth high ENR team, third high agronomy team, team fifth high farm business team,” FFA member Baylee Brence said. “But I felt that over the year we really came together as a chapter. And that’s the most important thing.”

The importance of community within the chapter was evident when the assembly members excitedly congratulated each other on their awards and cried when members Katie Beavers, Brooke Bessler, Katherine, Charlee, Baylee and Emma Brence were presented with photos of the loved ones they lost this year.

All involved smiled through the awarding of honorary FFA degree winners: Heather Morrison, Bryce and Terri Meyers, Brian and Erin Beavers and Eli and Sarah Wambeke. Powell High School teacher Wendy Smith was mentioned for being awarded her honorary state degree at the FFA state convention.

FFA students who received notable awards included Tori Black (Star Greenhand), Gonzales (Outstanding Sophomore), Blackmore (Outstanding Junior) and Katie Beavers (Outstanding Senior). Four students earned their State Degrees: Katie Beavers, Elizabeth Morrison, Garrett Tharp and Bessler.

The Parent Support Group awarded seniors Sammy Rivas, Katie Beavers, Elizabeth Morrison, Abigail Wambeke, Allison Morrison and Kaylee Deglau with scholarships.

Closing the evening, FFA officers bid farewell to Shannon Darrough who has advised the chapter for two years and announced state officers.

“In this chapter you helped us dream big, work hard, have fun, help each other, be positive, stay strong, never give up, build a team and you always make sure we look good in corduroy,” Bessler said. “Thank you for going with our crazy, always making sure we are busy and always being willing to make a Red Bull run when we start freaking out about a competition. We hope you will be able to thoroughly enjoy the next season in your life. Thank you for being our adviser.”

For the 2023-2024 school year the FFA Chapter will be under the leadership of President Emma Brence, Vice President Brooke Bessler, Second Vice President Wyatt Blackmore, Secretary Aramonie Brinkerhoff, Treasurer Baylee Brence, Reporter Tori Black, Sentinel Wyatt Heffington and Parliamentarian Hadley Cooper.
