It was a surprise birthday luncheon to help Jim Kranz celebrate his 90th birthday Tuesday, March 5 at the Lamplighter in Powell.
The gathering included sons Donnie Kranz, recently relocated to Powell from North Carolina, Mark Kranz of Columbia, South Carolina and Bruce and Kelly Hicks of Powell; two sisters, Mary Kranz-Gunsch of Billings and Judy Kranz-Driscoll of Oregon City, Oregon; and two nieces, Erin Kranz-Linden and Jacque Cobourn.
Jim Kranz, a resident of Rocky Mountain Manor, was born March 5, 1934, in Watertown, South Dakota. His parents were Pete and Millie Kranz, longtime proprietors of the Gambles Store on Powell’s main street. When Pete Kranz died in 1966, Jim Kranz stepped into ownership and management of Gambles for a number of years.
His lifetime career then blossomed. He was an agent for 33 years with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., a position which started in Powell and took him to Lake Tahoe, California. After retirement, he and his wife Betty moved to Oklahoma to be near her family before returning to Powell and Rocky Mountain Manor in 2020. His wife of 52 years died April 30, 2023.
A third son of Jim Kranz, Danny, died in 1999. Two brothers, John and Rich Kranz, are also deceased.
