Excited to share stories of our community

As far back as I can remember I have been intrigued by the world of journalism. From superheroes like Spider-Man and Superman spending their free time writing for either the Daily Bugle or Daily Planet, knowing that superheroes such as those would give this profession the light of day always stood out to me.

I joined Powell High School’s own online newspaper, the Prowl, at the beginning of my sophomore year. Since then, I have been blessed with so many amazing memories on the staff that I’ve come to know so well. In this staff, I have had the honor to work with such gifted people as Gabby Paterson and Emma Johnson, who have both served as previous interns to the Powell Tribune, as well as Katie Morrison who I have no doubt will achieve great things writing opinion stories for this paper over the course of the summer.

In saying this, I hope to do well by them and what I’ve been so gifted to be a part of over these past two years. While originally only joining the staff as a reporter, I have since had the role of news editor for the site, and will have the honor of being the first ever publishing editor as I become a senior this fall.

Interning for the Tribune now, I can definitely say it’s a big change. While I hope to continue doing what I love, discussing movies and pop culture with readers, I also hope that this will give me an opportunity to see what else this wonderful town and community have to offer. Journalism is not just about covering all the big intricacies of the world, while that is still definitely fascinating in its own right. Journalism to me is about detailing the lives of the people in the world. Writing about communities like the one we live in has given me immense joy over the years and I hope to be able to transfer that over to the Tribune.

Something that I strive to do at my time here, just like I’ve done for the Prowl, is to give you, the reader, the facts. Giving people just the facts of a set of circumstances can help paint a clearer picture to those learning about the story at hand. Facts are a necessary feature needed for the public to form a concise, unbiased opinion for themselves on a matter.

In my time writing for the Prowl and looking through previous interns’ introduction columns, I have learned one of the cornerstones for writing an article and sharing a story is to minimize harm.

I hope to do justice to what I will go on to put on the page and to the people’s stories they share. I want to bring not just the facts of a circumstance to the audience but also the truth behind it to them as well. I am incredibly thankful to not only those who have helped me get here from the Prowl staff but to the staff of the Tribune for welcoming me like they have. I look forward to seeing where it is this opportunity will take me, but also to where the lessons learned here can influence others when I return to the Prowl in the fall.
