Seventh graders lose close weekend battle

The eighth grade Powell Cub girls’ track and field team secured another dominant victory in Lovell last Saturday, winning by 89.5 points while the seventh grade girls finished second, narrowly losing to the hosts by two points.

The eighth grade squad was led by a quadruple event winner, as Kindyle Floy won the 100 meters (13.44), 200 meters (28.22), 400 meters (1:02.61) and the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 8 inches. She added a new qualifying mark for the Best of the Best in the 400 meters, having already qualified in her other three events.

Abigail Visocky was a double event winner, earning the top spot in the 100 meter hurdles (18.73) and the 200 meter hurdles (34.63) to earn qualifying marks in both events.

Sam Edgell was the final individual event winner, taking the top spot in the shot put (25-1), and earning a qualifying mark in that event alongside the discus (71-6) where she placed third.

Other qualifying marks came from Macie Velasco placing second in the 1600 (6:09.42); Vera Thomas placing third in the 100 meter hurdles (19.32) and Autumn Kidd taking fourth in the high jump (4-6).

The 4x400 relay team of Alaja Love, Grace Perry, Velasco and Alyssa Wantulok won with a time of 4:55.74.

Powell dominated with 42 top eight finishes, running away with 204.5 points compared to second placed Lovell with 115 as Worland took third with 39 points.

“Repeating a strong performance boosts their morale and confidence. It showed how focused these girls are and how hard they work,” assistant coach Amanda Haney said. “It sets the standard high for future competitions. These girls help motivate each other and push one another at practice as well as encouraging each other at the meet.”

A close finish for the seventh grade girls saw the girls fall just short of host Lovell, narrowly losing 128-126 and finishing second.

On the bright side, the Cubs had several individual winners.

Anyston Keller earned a qualifying mark in the 1600 meters, after winning with a time of 6:08.56.

Lynea Christensen claimed victory in the high jump (4-4) and Zaphira Paul won the 200 meters (31.74) as the other event winners.

Paul earned a qualifying mark in the pole vault with her second place finish after clearing 6-0, and Kara Sanders was the other Cub to earn a new qualifying mark, after leaping 28-0 1/4 in the triple jump.

Powell earned two wins in the relays with the squad of Paul, Keylyn Knuth, Darby Mckee and Ann Trinh winning with a 59.72, and the team of Christensen, Keller, Sanders and Landyn Horsley won the 4x400 with a 5:02.31.

The Cubs had 21 top eight finishes, but were unable to claim the top spot with some key point earners absent for the meet.

“Lovell is always going to be tough competition, no doubt about it,” Haney said. “However, we were missing several point earners this weekend. It will be good to see how things go in Cody when we have almost our whole team. The girls who performed in Lovell showed a lot of grit and perseverance, and grew a lot in one week.”

The Cubs will head out one more time this week, heading to Cody to take part in an invite starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Powell will then return home, to take part in its home invitational next weekend on Saturday, April 27.
