Hoping to wrap up the quick month-long season, the Powell Middle School boys’ track and field teams made the trip to Thermopolis on Saturday for the Yellowstone Conference meet, where the eighth graders earned a second straight team title and the seventh graders finished in a comfortable second place.

Leading the way for the eighth graders was a strong core that won eight individual events in total along with several top finishes.

The top performer for the Cubs was Keaton Bennett, who won the 100 hurdles in 15.9, the 200 hurdles in 28.74 and the pole vault by clearing 11 feet.

Another multiple event winner was Karcher Foley, who won the long jump (17-8 1/2) and triple jump (34-10 1/4).

The other event winners were Braxton Nelson in the high jump, who tied the school record with a leap of 5-10, while JW Faulkner won the shot put with a throw of 33-3 and Levi Cox won the discus with a throw of 98-2.

“Braxton’s jump of 5-10 was a huge jump. He broke his personal record by 6 inches and also tied the school record. He had a great day jump,” assistant coach Dale Estes said.

Powell also won the 4x400 relay via the team of Landon McDonald, Orin Letherman, Tucker Muecke and Michael Stensing in 4:45.65.

The Cubs also earned top three finishes in several events, with Nelson taking second in the 100 meters (12.18) and third in the 200 meters (25.06); Cobey Khan third in the 100 meters (12.34) and second in the 400 meters (59.71); Foley second in the 200 meters (24.85), McDonald second in the pole vault (7-0) and Brayden Benander third in the 200 meter hurdles (31.33).

Benander was the lone Cub who added new Best of the Best individual qualifying marks, qualifying in the 200 meter hurdles and the long jump with a leap of 15-7.

Powell finished well ahead of the competition, earning 184 points as a team, with Riverton taking second with 106 points and Thermopolis was third with 89.

“Our boys dominated,” assistant coach Amanda Haney said. “They all performed exceptionally well once again, while adding several more personal records.”

The seventh grade squad finished off a good season with a second place finish as a team, winning one individual event and two relays in Thermopolis.

Justin Marquez was the one individual event winner, taking the shot put with a 33-3 3/4.

The 4x100 relay team of Isaiah Torres, Russell Goolsbey, Justin Marquez and Forest Kleinfeldt won in 55.39, while the 4x400 team of Blake Wood, Wyatt Hill, Karson Howe and Mason Cheatham won in 5:18.56.
