Seventh graders take second in Lovell meet

Another dominant performance for the Powell Middle School eighth grade boys’ track and field team was boosted by a new school record, breaking the 4x100 relay time and winning the Lovell meet, while the seventh grade boys placed second in a tough meet.

That 4x100 relay team was made up of Dylan DeBoer, Karcher Foley, Cobey Khan and Braxton Nelson, finishing with a time of 49.18 and breaking a 20-year-old record that previously sat at 49.36.

“The eighth grade boys came into this season knowing what they wanted to accomplish this season, and you can see the effort they put in during the offseason,” assistant coach Amanda Haney said. “The 4x100 team has been determined for over a year to break this record.”

A strong individual day came from Keaton Bennett, who won the 100 meter hurdles in 16.28 and the pole vault after clearing 10 feet, 6 inches.

Khan won the 200 meters in 25.35, earning a qualifying mark to the Best of the Best meet in the process.

Nelson won the high jump (5-4), and Foley won the triple jump (36-5) as the other two individual winners.

New qualifying marks came from Nelson taking second in the 200 meters (25.51) and third in the 100 meters (12.38); Alex Werner placing second in the 1600 meters (5:28.57); Khan placing fourth in the 100 meters (12.47) and Foley placing fifth in the 100 meters (12.6).

The relay teams earned three total wins on the day, as the 4x400 team of Orin Onstine, Landon McDonald, Michael Stensing and Werner won in 4:33.44 and the 800 sprint medley team of Bennett, Brayden Benander, Santiago Gutierrez and Cash Peterson won in 1:53.61 in addition to the 4x100 team.

Overall the Cubs had 33 top eight finishes, finishing with 169 points, well ahead of second place Rocky Mountain with 106 and Burlington in third with 39.

The seventh grade Cubs were runners-up, with a couple athletes earning first place finishes in a tough competition.

Blake Wood won the triple jump with a leap of 31-10 1/2 and Justin Marquez won the shot put with a throw of 34-9.

The seventh graders had one new qualifier, after Forest Kleinfeldt placed fourth in the triple jump (29-1).

One relay victory for the Cubs came in the 4x400 team of Mason Cheatham, Wyatt Hill, Karson Howe and Blake Wood with a time of 5:15.57.

Overall the seventh graders had 25 top eight finishes, but placed second with 87 points, behind winners Worland which had 153.5 points and just ahead of Greybull which had 74.

“These boys are very dedicated to improving not only at each meet, but each day in practice,” Haney said. “Many of them will stay late to fine tune a few skills. This is when it really gets fun for them because they are starting to really figure out what events they enjoy and what events they are most skilled at. Then the personal goals get set.”

Powell heads back out on the road this weekend to Cody to take part in its invitational at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

That will be the final road meet for the Cubs before returning home next weekend to host their own invitational next Saturday, April 27.
