Eastern Wyoming College board rejects presidential candidates

TORRINGTON (WNE) — The Eastern Wyoming College Board of Trustees announced an unsuccessful search for its next president.

In a press release, EWC leaders said they decided that the three finalists — Michelle Schutt of the College of Southern Idaho, James Taylor of Utah State University Eastern and Randy Smith, a special adviser to the Chief for the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma — were not in alignment with the college’s needs.

“The Board would like to thank the candidates for their time and interest in EWC,” said Robert Baumgartner, the chair of the college’s board.

Schutt was also a recent finalist for the president’s position at Northwest College. NWC’s board ultimately opted to hire Interim President Lisa Watson for the permanent post.

At EWC, the current president, Lesley Travers, is retiring on June 30. An interim president will be appointed by the board while a new search is conducted.

Under the new search, EWC leaders hope to have a permanent president in place on Jan. 1, 2023.

According to the EWC website, the search firm of Gold Hill Associates, under the consultation of Walter H. Nolte, was hired to help in the presidential search process along with many students, trustees, employees and members of the community.
