Heading down to Thermopolis on Saturday the Powell Middle School girls’ track and field teams dominated the competition at the Yellowstone Conference meet, with both teams winning titles after pulling away by more than 30 points over the competition.

“Both of the girls’ teams have shown their skill and talent throughout the season,” assistant coach Amanda Haney said. “It was spectacular to see their dominating performance once again, while adding several more personal records. They have peaked when they are supposed to peak.”

Leading the way was the seventh grade team, which won its conference title by 66 points over the next closest team.

The seventh grade Cubs had a host of individual first place finishes, as Lucy Ostermiller won the 100 meters in 13.56, Lynea Christensen won the 400 meters in 1:10.76, Kara Sanders won the 800 meters in 2:49, Anyston Keller won the 1600 meters in 6:03.23 and Zaphira Paul won the pole vault clearing 5 feet, 6 inches.

Powell also won the two relays it entered, as the team of Ann Trinh, Addie Gillett, Paul and Ostermiller won the 4x100 in 56.01, and the team of Christensen, Keller, Sanders and Kaytlee George won the 4x400 in 5:06.46.

The seventh grade Cubs got a strong contribution from the 400 meters, with the Cubs placing first and second, while having four of the first six total in the event.

“These ladies earned 25 points for the team in just one race,” Haney said. “Throughout the week we talked and practiced strategies on running the 400. This is one of the hardest races and I am so proud of the effort they gave during practice to get better for conference.”

Other top three finishes included Paul placing second in the 200 meters (29.5) and 200 meter hurdles (33.01); Ostermiller second in the triple jump (29-4) and third in the 100 meter hurdles (18.78); George second in the 400 (1:11.27) and third in long jump (13-8 1/2); Keller second in the 800 meters (1:11.27); Landyn Horsley third in the 1600 meters (6:32.27); Darby McKee third in the 200 meter hurdles (37) and Christensen third in the high jump (4-4).

Powell finished with 194 total points, 66 ahead of second placed Lovell and 113 ahead of third place Lander.

For the eighth graders the Cubs had strong performances as well, winning four events individually along with one relay.

Three of those four events were won by Kindyle Floy, who won the 100 meters (12.88), 400 meters (1:02.44) and high jump (4-10) while Abigail Visocky was the other individual winner clearing 7-6 in the pole vault.

The other win came in the 4x100 relay, with the quartet of Visocky, Addy Brown, Autumn Kidd and Floy breaking the school record once again with a time of 54.28.

Overall the eighth grade Cubs used strong depth to help win their second conference title in a row.

Top three finishes included Visocky placing second in the 100 meter hurdles (17.48) and third in the 200 meter hurdles (32); Macie Velasco third in both the 800 meters (2:42.87) and the 1600 meters (6:01.08); Stella Shoopman third in the 100 meter hurdles (17.6) and Lily Sapp third in the pole vault (5-0).

In that final meet Maddie Croft qualified for the Best of the Best in the discus throwing 67-4 and Peyton Ott qualified for the long jump with a leap of 13-6 1/2.
