Drivers zip to finish at figure 8 race

Fundraiser race for Bryce Kelso set for Aug. 30

Even slotted in the middle of the week, the Park County Fair’s figure 8 race still proved a big draw last week, with ticket sales surpassing the organizer’s expectations.

“We had a great showing,” said organizer Dustin Short of DSE.

A total of 52 drivers dashed and crashed around the track in the July 24 race, and Short said he received a lot of positive feedback from the racers.

Terren Plenert topped the field in the eight-cylinder class — adding in a third place finish in the men’s four- and six-cylinder — while his wife, Ricque Plenert, won the women’s four- and six-cylinder class.

Meanwhile, Bobby West won the men’s four- and six-cylinder class and Chris Cozzens emerged on top in the truck/SUV/minivan class.

The race started at 7 p.m. and didn’t wrap up until around 11:30 p.m.

“It went pretty late,” Short said, “but the crowd stayed with it.”

That included sticking through a longer-than-planned intermission.

“We had a little issue getting some people lined up,” Short explained, adding, “I do apologize to everybody that had to wait for that, but we tried to get it as quick as we could.

“I know it sucks because it was late on a Wednesday,” he said, thanking attendees for their patience.

The fair event was the second figure 8 race of the summer at the grandstands, and a third is planned for later this month.

Called “Full Throttle for Kelso,” the Aug. 30 race is a fundraiser for Bryce Kelso of Powell; he suffered severe burns when his car caught fire during the fair’s demolition derby.

In addition to needing drivers and spectators, Short is seeking donations for a basket raffle plus sponsors to help put on the event.

“The whole idea is to raise as much money as we possibly can,” he said, with all of the proceeds going directly to the Kelsos.

The race is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds, with food trucks and drinks available.

Tickets are priced at $20 for box seats, $15 for adult general admission and $10 for those 12 and under in general admission. Tickets for both the race and the raffle will be available at DSE and at the gate.
