Dreams to reality : Youth golfer working to launch clothing line

SHERIDAN — What started out as a dream is now getting closer to a reality for 12-year-old golfer Declan Jacobson, as his golfwear line Double Edge Golf will soon be launching to provide a more vibrant look for golfers of all ages.

Jacobson grew up loving golf, a game he has played since he was 2 years old. He has continued not only to grow his passion for the sport, but also to become a skillful player, winning tournaments such as the Puget Sound Amateur Invitational in Washington in October 2022 and the Wyoming Junior PGA Championships ( the 11-13 age group) in Laramie June 2023.

Throughout his time playing, Jacobson noticed many brands did not have the size, patterns and colors that he liked to wear. This led to his vision of wanting to create patterns with vibrant colors such as neon green and pink for  young golfers to wear.

Jacobson used his interest in sketching to design patterns of what he wanted his golf line to be. He started the process in August 2023 with his mother Jeriann Jacobson and Jenae Neeson, a family friend and local graphic designer.

Jeriann describes Declan as a go-getter and believes the business is a great learning experience for her son.

“He makes things happen, you know, even just around the house he will just go find his own cardboard, his own paints, and he’d be out in the garage building and creating,” she said. “I finally sat down with my husband this time last year and was like, ‘He’s about ready to wear adult sizes. He really wants to do this.’ If this doesn’t go very far, he’s still learning a lot. So as a team, my husband and I decided to do this and that’s about when Jenae was over and everything fell into place.”

The golf line is not only centered around the colors, but also the logo of a white buffalo.

Declan wrote a story about the creature in fourth grade and has done a few paintings of it. The brand’s white buffalo logo has a subtle texture of a golf ball on its shoulder.

“We were saying how cool it would be because it represents not only what we feel like the mountain west area the buffalo does, but also the white part represents how unique the animal is,” Jeriann said.

Daclan’s brand will include motivational slogans in unique parts of the clothes — such as the saying “Work Hard. Play Hard,” above the cuff, so players can see the saying before they swing their golf clubs.

Declan also wants to dedicate some of his earnings toward the youth golf programs in Sheridan that helped him get where he is now as well as support people with special needs.

“When I was in elementary school, I was a peer helper, so I helped with kids with special needs. And my aunt had special needs, and I just thought it’s be a good idea to help them out and give back,” Declan said, adding that he feels happy inside and was satisfied to be in the position to help his home community.

With the hopes of launching the golf line in the fall, Declan, his parents and Neeson are currently working on designing polo shirts to add to the catalog.

Declan is eager to provide the golf community with a new look and see his vision come to life.

“I’m going to take business cards to every tournament I go to and then also around school. A bunch of kids have been wearing my stuff,” he said. “I feel proud, and it makes me feel good because I’ve worked really hard for it and have a great team working with me.”
