New competition and a road trip failed to slow down the Cubs boys’ track teams, as the seventh graders placed second and the eighth graders won in Riverton on Saturday.

Top performers for the seventh graders included Breckyn Kobbe, who placed second in the 100 meters with a time of 12.04, second in the 200 meters with a time of 28.06, second in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 10 1/2 inches, and third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:04.86. Kaden Wolff placed second in the shot put with a throw of 28 feet, 1 1/2 inches; Austin Cook placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 28.59; Lincoln Crawford placed third in the 200 meter hurdles with a time of 34.12; and Brady Harvey took third in the shot put with a throw of 27 feet, 11 inches.

Winners for the eighth grade boys included Darren Smith in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.74, Korbyn Warren in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:16, Nathan Preator in the 200 meter hurdles with a time of 29.93 and Gabe Weimer in the discus with a throw of 112 feet, 3 inches.

The relay team of Mason Coombs, Cash Ashcraft, Shane Kirkpatrick and Smith won the 4x200 medley relay with a time of 1:54.10. In the 4x400, Kirkpatrick, Josh Pfeifer, Thomas Shuman and Warren won with a time of 4:12.52.

Other top performers included Weimer taking third in the 100 meters with a time of 13.31. Smith placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.21 and third in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 8 inches. Kirkpatrick took third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.43. Pfeifer placed second in the 800 meters with a 2:23.62 and third in the 1600 meters with a time of 5:26.02. Warren placed third in the 800 meters with a 2:29.40. Landon Hyde placed second in the high jump clearing 5 feet, 2 inches.

After another strong performance, Cubs coach Zach Coombs is excited by the amount of personal records (PRs) that the athletes put together at the Riverton meet.

“We focus on improving and bettering our time or distance from the previous week,” Coombs said. “As long as kids are improving every week or every other week we are on the right track.”

The Cubs will now head into a week of much needed rest after their Tuesday meet in Worland was canceled due to weather.

The next opportunity for the Cubs to improve their times will be Saturday, April 23 in Cody, starting at 9:30 a.m.
