A strong opening meet resulted in two team victories for the Powell Middle School Cub boys’ track and field teams, with the eighth graders winning by 122.5 points and the seventh graders holding off a charge from host Worland to win by 17.5 points.
The eighth grade team had a dominant day, winning nine individual events and three relays along with 40 top eight finishes to accumulate 246.83 points.
Keaton Bennett was the only three-event winner for the Cubs, winning the 100 meter hurdles (17.75), 200 meter hurdles (30.09) and pole vault clearing 11 feet — earning qualifying marks in all three events for the Best of the Best at the end of the season.
Braxton Nelson won both the 100 meters (12.88) and 200 meters (26.91), and Karcher Foley won the long jump (18-8 1/2) and the triple jump (37-4 1/2). Foley earned qualifying marks in both jumps.
JW Faulkner won the shot put (32-11) and Levi Cox won the discus (103-3), with Cox earning a qualifying mark in the discus.
Other qualifying marks came from Cobey Khan placing second in the 400 (57.75), Nelson placing second in the high jump (5-2), Santiago Gutierrez placing third in the high jump (5-2) and Landon McDonald placing second in pole vault (8-0).
In the relays, Dylan DeBoer, Foley, Khan and Nelson won the 4x100 (49.7); Brayden Benander, Bennett, Gutierrez and Cash Peterson won the 4x200 (1:56.46) and the group of Landon McDonald, Alex Werner, Noah Young and Orin Onstine won the 4x400 (4:34.39).
“Winning nearly every event shows the remarkable strength and skill from this group as well as their potential for the future,” assistant coach Amanda Haney said.
The seventh grade boys used a combination of four individual victories and two relay wins along with 31 top eight finishes to come in just ahead of Worland with 189.5 points.
Blake Wood won the triple jump (31-8 1/2) and Justin Marquez won the shot put (30-6 1/4) to earn the only two qualifying marks on Friday for the seventh grade Cubs.
The other two victors were Isaiah Torres in the 1600 (6:02.81) and Karzten Carter in the 200 meter hurdles (36.41).
The group of Russell Goolsbey, Forest Kleinfeldt, Marquez and Torres won the 4x100 (55.16) while Mason Cheatham, Wyatt Hill, Karson Howe and Blake Wood won the 4x400 (5:22.99).
“This is a group of dedicated and talented young men. They did not know what to expect at this first meet, but now they have the thirst and are working hard to accomplish more,” Haney said. “All the coaches are thrilled with the athletes and are very happy with their impressive performances. We are looking forward to a successful and exciting season.”
Powell will stay closer to home this weekend, making the trip to Lovell at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday to take part in its invitational.
