Crews continue cleaning up Yellowstone gas spill

Posted

The road between Mud Volcano and Fishing Bridge Junction in Yellowstone National Park is expected to open soon, but not before Labor Day weekend, according to officials.

After a tandem trailer overturned and spilled about 3,000 gallons of unleaded gasoline last week — the biggest spill inside the park in more than two decades — the road has been closed to first clear the commercial vehicle and then clean up the spill.

A large hole in the road was dug to locate the extent of the spilled gasoline, remove the contaminated soil and ensure cleanup. The excavated hole is 100 feet wide by 100 feet long by 10 feet deep.

The road is expected to reopen within five to seven days, Yellowstone officials said Tuesday, once the cleanup effort is finished and the road is repaired.

Holiday weekend visitors are encouraged to consider alternate routes. Those wishing to see Mud Volcano will need to access the geothermal feature from the north while Fishing Bridge is only accessible from the south and east.

The tandem trailer, which was delivering gas to park facilities, rolled on the west side of the road near the Yellowstone River on Thursday, Aug. 27. Currently, there is no evidence that gasoline entered the Yellowstone River, but the incident remains under investigation.

Park engineers are coordinating with the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality on cleanup efforts. The contaminated soil and material will be removed from the park and disposed of at an appropriate facility, Yellowstone officials said.
