Pioneers head to BillingsThe Powell Pioneers, 32-10 on the season, travel to Billings today (Thursday) to begin their appearance in the Halos Invitational Wood Bat Tournament. The team will be in search of its third consecutive tournament championship at the event. The Pioneers carry a seven-game winning streak into the event after receiving a pair of forfeit wins over Gillette on Tuesday night. The team opens its tournament quest at 3 p.m. today (Thursday) with a game against Big League Baseball. Powell plays two games on Friday, starting at 10:45 a.m. against a familiar nemesis, the Billings Blue Jays. The Pioneers face the host Halos later in the day for a scheduled 6:15 p.m. game. Based on the results of three preliminary games, teams will be seeded for Saturday's finals. The tournament championship game is scheduled for 3:45 p.m.In addition to the Pioneers' three preliminary opponents, the Billings Cardinals and the Miles City (Mont.) Mavericks are also part of the six-team tournament field. The Pioneers return home on July 14 for a doubleheader against Riverton. Just six regular-season games remain on Powell's schedule at the conclusion of weekend tournament play.
