Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Protecting the Wild will finally air the black-footed ferret episode recorded in Meeteetse last year with ranchers Kris and Allen Hogg. The episode will premiere on Saturday, May 18, during its Saturday morning slot on NBC.

The show was delayed when NBC picked up the show from RFD-TV, according to a show’s spokesperson.

“When the show went from RFD-TV to being picked up by NBC (it’s original home when the show first debuted in 1963), there was a transition period,” they said.

The storied franchise returned to NBC on Oct. 7, 2023, co-hosted by both Peter Gros and wildlife ecologist Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant. The show quickly became the most-watched weekend wildlife show on television, garnering an average of more than a million viewers.

The Hogg Family is inviting the public to watch the episode at the Elkhorn Bar in Meeteetse on the 18th at 6 p.m. The episode was filmed on the Hogg’s property and the couple are prominently featured in the show. The last 18 surviving, previously thought extinct, black-footed ferrets were located and eventually rescued from the Hogg ranch more than 40 years ago.

Both the Hogg and Pitchfork ranches have worked with state and federal officials to create a safe habitat for the species. The fight to save the species from extinction has been one of the great wildlife conservation efforts in American history.

Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Protecting the Wild showcases wildlife success stories across the United States. The series hopes to inspire the next generation of conservationists through captivating storytelling and stunning cinematography.

“Through Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Protecting the Wild, the legacy of Marlin Perkins, Jim Fowler and all of the Wild Kingdom family lives on in each story we tell. Wild Kingdom’s continued goal is to be a valuable resource for individuals seeking to learn more about animals and wildlife stewardship, just as it has been doing since 1963,” reads a press release from the show’s producers.

The series was recently nominated for four Daytime Emmy Awards. The 2024 Daytime Emmy Awards airs June 7 on CBS and Paramount+.
