Two-day search of Cody area fails to locate missing Montana man

Posted

A missing Montana man’s vehicle was found abandoned north of Cody last week, but two days of intense searching failed to find the man himself.

John Richard Borninkhof, 54, reportedly left his home on the evening of Wednesday, July 12, after an argument with his wife. He hasn’t been seen since.

On Saturday morning, a caller reported that a vehicle had been left in the Newton Lakes area for the past three days, with keys and valuables still inside. Authorities determined that the vehicle belonged to Borninkhof and launched a search of the area, based around the Outlaw Trail.

Personnel from Park County Search and Rescue were joined by a slew of agencies and organizations. They included Big Horn County Search and Rescue, a Guardian Flight helicopter, the Bureau of Reclamation, the Bureau of Land Management, Park County Community Emergency Response Team, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Western Montana Search Dogs, Absaroka Search Dogs, Park County Pedalers, the Shoshone Trails Coalition,  and multiple volunteers from the public; the Cody Shooting Complex voluntarily closed the adjacent ranges for the searchers’ safety.

They used horses, e-bikes donated by Joyvagen Cycles, drones, off-road motorcycles, airplane flights and a helicopter, but Saturday’s and Sunday’s searches came up empty.

“We logged 57 volunteers who assisted on this search but unfortunately, we have been unable to locate [Borninkhof],” said Monte McClain, a spokesman for the Park County Sheriff’s Office.

Borninkhof is described as 6 feet, 2 inches and 290 pounds with gray, balding hair and blue eyes. He suffers from medical conditions and may be suicidal, according to authorities.

Taynger Borninkhof said Monday that the family is “eternally grateful” to the Cody community for the help.

“[T]hey have gone out of their way to provide every resource possible to this search,” she wrote in a Facebook post. “We need this man back, anything, anything at all is helpful.”

Anyone with information about John Borninkhof’s whereabouts is asked to contact Laurel, Montana, police at 406-628-8737 or to call 911.
