The Powell Panther swim camp was in full force at the Powell Aquatic Center on July 17-22 and July 24-29 — allowing athletes to get in the pool before the upcoming swim season in the fall.
The three-hour sessions each day got athletes back moving in the pool, with the girls’ swim season quickly approaching.
“Swim camp gives our athletes the opportunity to get acclimated back to the water and to establish a base level of fitness,” coach Bob Smartt said.
Throughout the camp, athletes were focused on improving their technique in addition to building that baseline level.
“In camp we focus on swim drills which help improve the athletes’ technique,” Smartt said.
Camp also gave new athletes the opportunity to get involved and allow for the coaching staff to understand what level the athletes are at coming into the program.
“Camp also gives us an introduction to new athletes so we can assess their strengths and how they can best contribute to them,” Smartt said.
The two weeks of camp were beneficial for the girls because the season is fast approaching for the program in the fall with a short season giving the Panthers little time for error.
“Our swim season is short, from the first day of practice to the conference championship is less than 10 weeks,” Smartt said.
The season is scheduled to start Aug. 14, with the first meet Aug. 26 in Lander.
