Continuing favorable fall weather is moving the sugar beet harvest in the Lovell factory district nearly three-quarters of the way to the finish line.
If anything, it’s been a little too warm. This has slowed the harvest some, said Ric Rodriguez, Heart Mountain grower and a member of the Western Sugar Cooperative board.
“As of today (Wednesday), Lovell is close to 70% complete,” Rodriguez said. “Depending on the weather, most growers will be finishing up by next week.”
Sugar beet yields are reported close to the projected 27.8 tons per acre, he added. Sugar content of delivered beets is running in the 18% range, “so it’s close to an average crop for the Lovell district.”
Quality across the board is a bright spot.
“We are having excellent quality this year in Lovell which translates to more bags of sugar produced,” said Rodriguez.
Factory performance at Lovell and over the Western Cooperative four-state region has been strong.
“All of the factories are running very well this year,” he said.
