Four injured in Friday afternoon crash

Posted

A Friday afternoon crash at the intersection of Coulter Avenue and Panther Boulevard resulted in injuries to four people.

The collision occurred around 1 p.m., when a 2002 Ford Expedition pulled onto the highway in front of an eastbound 1998 Dodge pickup, said Powell Police Lt. Matt McCaslin.

The resulting impact caused the Ford to roll all the way over, McCaslin said, and Powell firefighters had to extricate a passenger from the SUV.

The driver of the Ford, 78-year-old Bruce Dempster of Lovell, and the driver of the Dodge, 62-year-old Rose Ricchio of Cody, were both taken to Powell Valley Hospital by ambulance, as were their passengers. McCaslin said he didn’t know the extent of their injuries, but he did not believe they were life-threatening.

While McCaslin heard some speculation that the tall pines on the northeast corner of the intersection were a factor in the crash , they in fact “had nothing to do with this,” McCaslin said. The Ford — driven by 78-year-old Bruce Dempster of Lovell — was on the opposite, southern side of the intersection when it attempted to turn left (west) toward town. Dempster was cited for failure to yield the right of way at a stop sign.

The crash blocked the western lanes of Coulter Avenue/U.S. Highway 14A, disrupting traffic for over an hour. Police, the Wyoming Highway Patrol and the Park County Sheriff’s Office diverted westbound vehicles onto Lane 8H while north- and southbound traffic was halted on Panther Boulevard. McCaslin said authorities cleared from the scene around 2:15 p.m.
