Due to a dismal weather forecast for last Saturday, the seventh and eighth-grade Powell Middle School boys’ track teams had to compete on Thursday in Cody in a last-minute dual. 

The Cubs teams also joined forces, defeating Cody 276 to 231 in their first combined competition of the season.

First-place finishers for the Cubs included Caden Nelson in the 200 meters with a time of 26.32, the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 2 1/2 inches, and the triple jump with a jump of 36 feet, 6 3/4 inches. 

Gabriel Weimer swept the throwing events, winning the discus with a throw of 118 feet, 3 1/2 inches and the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 7 inches; Shane Kirkpatrick won the 400 meters with a 59.71; Josh Pfeifer won the 1600 with a time of 5:22.40; and Dayton Lawrence won the pole vault clearing 8 feet, 6 inches.

The Cubs earned a high majority of their points in the throwing events, as Weimer, Kadden Wolfe and Brody Harvey all placed in the top three in their competitions.

The invitational in Cody that was originally scheduled for last Saturday was moved to April 27, but the Cubs were unable to attend due to a scheduling conflict.

The Cubs are scheduled to take to the track again on Saturday, as they make the short trip to Lovell for their middle school invitational.
