Lady Panthers finish first in Cody, Riverton Invitationals

The Lady Panthers swam to a pair of first-place finishes at both the Cody Invitational on Friday and the Riverton Invitational on Saturday, while also qualifying three more individual swimmers for state.

“The Panthers were up to the challenge to win two invites in a single weekend,” said PHS head coach Bob Smartt.

Cody Invitational

The Lady Panthers swam away with the top score at the Cody Invitational with 446 points, out-distancing the Worland Lady Warriors, who finished with 410 points.

Twenty-one personal best times were recorded at the meet which Smartt said was “a significant number, given that we had a 6 a.m. practice the morning of the meet. The divers had a very strong performance and diving was the top scoring event for the Panthers.”

Three of the five PHS divers qualified for state — Caitlyn Miner, JuliaKay O’Neill and Emma Karhu.

Smartt remarked that Karhu’s diving was “a remarkable performance” as it was only the freshman’s second dive in a high school meet.

The other two divers, Jala Satterwhite and Maddie Hackenberg “are now within hailing distance of the state cut,” Smartt said.

O’Neill also qualified for state in the 200 IM in her second place finish of 2:36.54 and in the 100 yard freestyle, with her leading off time of 1:04.07 in the 4x100 yard freestyle relay. Smartt said O’Neill’s qualifying for state in three events in one meet was a “rare feat.”

Kendyl Bohlman qualified for state in both the 200 freestyle, with her fifth place finish posting a time of 2:22.66, and the 500 freestyle, with her second place finish in 6:33.85.

Anna Fuller qualified in the 500 freestyle with her third place finish in 6:40.10.

Ashlyn Aguirre qualified in the 100 butterfly with her first place finish in 1:11.82.

As a team, Powell qualified for state in a total of seven events in Cody.

Riverton Invitational

At Riverton, Powell won with an impressive 104-point margin. PHS amassed 376.5 points, while Douglas finished second with 272 points. Riverton placed third with 255.5 points and Rawlins was fourth with 217.

Smartt said the large margin of victory was due to the team’s strong depth. The Lady Panthers only had one first place finish in the 12 events, but had nine second place finishes.

The Lady Panthers broke 18 personal records during the meet, too.

Sidney O’Brien became the eighth swimmer to qualify for state while taking second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:13.86. Bohlman added the 100 freestyle to her qualifying list with her first place finish of 1:03.30. Miner qualified in the 500 yard freestyle with her second place finish in 6:22.87

Next up for the Lady Panthers swim team is a Friday meet in Worland at 4 p.m. PHS will then host the Gene Dozah Invitational on Saturday, with a start time slated for 11 a.m. at the Powell Aquatic Center.
