Powell High School's track team and the girls soccer team have found success in the early goings of their state competitions.

The Lady Panther soccer team bounced back from a 4-3 loss to Lander in overtime on Thursday by beating Riverton 1-0 today (Friday). They'll play for the consolation championship against Star Valley at 9 a.m. Saturday in Sheridan.

Down in Casper, nine events have concluded so far at the State Track and Field Championships, with 12 Powell High School athletes placing in the top eight. In addition, Powell has seven runners who have advanced to the finals in five events with the conclusion of today's (Friday's) preliminary heats.

Alan Merritt finished sixth in the 3200 meter run, JuliaKay O’Neill finished second in the 800 meter run and Mason Olsen finished sixth in the discus.

The boys 4x100 meter relay team of AJ Lewis, Olsen, Paige Gann and TJ Abraham finished third, while the girls 4x800 team comprised of Rachelle Cole, Hailee Paul, Teo Faulkner and O’Neill placed fifth and the boys 4x800 team of Jay Cox, Colin Queen, Brody Karhu and Merritt took seventh.

Advancing to the finals in the following running events, by placing in the top eight, are: TJ Abraham in the 100 meter dash, Caitlyn Miner and Abraham in the 200 meter dash, O’Neill and Karhu in the 400 meter dash, Sabrina Shoopman in the 100 meter hurdles, Nate MaGill in the 110 meter hurdles and MaGill and Gann in the 300 meter hurdles.

Overall, the boys track team is in eighth place and the girls in ninth.
