Murray ‘Mick’ A. Welton

Murray “Mick” A. Welton died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2014, in the Billings Clinic. He was 77.

He was born in Lovell on Dec. 31, 1936.

He graduated from Powell High School in 1954. Mick served in the Army from 1957-58. He graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1961 with a bachelor of science degree in engineering.  

Mick married Jayne L. Peterson June 20, 1959, in Billings, at the American Lutheran Church. The Weltons lived in Wyoming, Washington, North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico and Utah in the 33 years Mick worked for the Boeing Company.

He retired in 1993 and they moved to Virginia City, Mont., to be near children and grandchildren. 

He was a member of Montana Snowmobile Association, the Elks, the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace (SPEEA), the Bozeman Senior Center. Mick’s interests included golf, racketball, hunting, snowmobiling, water aerobics and watching all kinds of sports. 

Mick volunteered in many areas: coaching sports, snowmobile safety instructor, card stops for horseback and snowmobile poker runs, preparing taxes for retired people, church VBS sports, Boy Scouts, Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program, Virginia City Fireworks, CERT Trained and leading church services at the local nursing home.

He was known for his love for people and his wonderful smile and sense of humor. He had a true servant’s heart and love for the Lord. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. Mick was an elder at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church. 

Mick was preceded in death by his parents, Murray Wright and Delma Mae (LaFollette) Welton and his son, Mitch O. Welton.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jayne P. Welton, and daughters and sons-in-law Melinda and Monty Tichenor, Melanie and Fred Wilson, and grandchildren Micolette Tichenor and Adam Frey, Marcus and Ashley Tichenor, Ricky, John, Turner and Emma Jane Wilson. He was excited to meet his first great-grandchild Tichenor to be born in December.
