Wyomingites share their love for libraries on Snapshot Day

On Wyoming Libraries Snapshot Day, residents across the Equality State showed how grateful they are for their libraries.

Snapshot Day — held Oct. 26 — was a day for libraries across the state to collect photos and stories that demonstrate the impact they have on their communities every single day. More than 50 libraries contributed dozens of patron comments and about 1,000 photos altogether.

In their comments, patrons shared stories of finding jobs or seeing their children enjoying books and library programs. Many talked of the helpful staff and how vital libraries are to rural communities. Others said they couldn’t otherwise afford the access to books and computers that they currently enjoy, thanks to their local libraries.

“I grew up using the library and I can’t imagine my life without it,” wrote Virginia Mees, a Park County Library patron. “It is an oasis in a volatile world and I hope everyone realizes what having a library in your community means to everyone.”

An anonymous Weston County patron wrote, “The library — it’s the whole world! Places and times I will never see, people I will never meet — they’re all here. This is my favorite place.”

On a single day, the Wyoming State Library estimates that approximately 7,000 people visit a public library in the Equality State, 1,200 use a library computer and 700 children and teens attend a program. Library staff field about 1,000 reference questions. Even those who don’t walk through the library doors are served — on Snapshot Day, more than 2,200 e-books and e-audiobooks were checked out from the statewide Wyoming Virtual Library.
