College teams return to action next week

A short winter break ends this weekend, as high school sports are back in the Powell area. Teams are looking to come out of the break and create momentum heading into the final two months of the season.

The action kicks off Thursday with a make-up game for the Powell High School boys’ basketball team against Cody — one that was postponed just before the break — will take place at the Panther Gym. The Panthers, who opened the year 1-2 at a Dec. 10-11 tournament in Buffalo, will look to get on track. The junior varsity tips off at 4 p.m. and varsity is set to follow at 5:30 p.m.

The PHS boys’ swim team will look to add to their nine qualifiers at home on Friday. The triangular meet will be senior night for the boys at the Powell Aquatic Center, as they will take on Douglas and Worland starting at 5 p.m.

The premier event for the weekend will be Saturday’s Gene Dozah Invitational, also at the Powell Aquatic Center. Starting at 10 a.m., it will be the swim team’s last home meet of the year.

The event will feature six teams: Cody, Douglas, Newcastle, Sublette County, Riverton and Worland.

The home slate of high school will be capped off Saturday night, as the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will host Rocky Mountain.

Both junior varsity teams are set to tip off at 4 p.m., the varsity girls will start at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity boys are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Wrestling will be on the road coming out of the break, heading to the Tom LeProwse Bozeman, Montana, Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The wrestling team will also host a quad at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Cody and Huntley and Laurel, Montana.

Northwest College sports are set to return next week, with wrestling on the road in Oklahoma and both basketball teams at home against Miles City on Thursday, Jan. 13. The games will be the final non-region contests for the Trappers, with the women’s game starting at 5:30 p.m. and the men to follow at 7:30 p.m.
