When the framework starts to tremble

In these uncertain times …” is a refrain that is heard over and over, from radio to TV. Everyone wants you to know that the days we live in seem to be on trembling foundations.

I would like to proclaim that nothing could be further from the truth. Our Father in heaven is not sitting dumbfounded upon the throne utterly in shock of what is unfolding in the world. Likewise, at his right hand Jesus Christ is not watching in rapt attention pondering what might unfold over the course of the day.

The prophet Isaiah wrote, “The Lord of hosts has sworn: ‘As I have planned, so shall it be, and as I have purposed, so shall it stand …’”

From our perspective, the framework with which we have depended on so long may, in fact, be wobbly, perhaps that is necessary. Necessary in the sense that it reveals where our hearts and faith are placed.

Have we built our lives on the frail and fleeting joys of this temporal world? Or do we look as Abraham did for, “… the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God.”

If we build on any foundation other than Christ and his unchanging, never faltering truth, then we have missed the mark. Could it be that we have misplaced our affections and set our hearts on things below and settled for less than what God has promised — that promise being God himself. The question then is, “Where is my heart?”
