What is going on in sports?

Posted

This week in sports has been an absolute whirlwind of different emotions.

We kicked off the winter sports season with peak performances at all levels, with thousands of people funneling through the Panther wrestling invite, swim meets and local basketball games.

Fourteen-plus hours of coverage, a lot of caffeine and the area’s busiest weekend in over a month is now complete.

On top of local sports, there are tons of different achievements and announcements going on around the world:

• The University of Wyoming football team will be playing in another bowl game on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Boise, as they look to finish the season on a high note with a winning record.

• Stephen Curry broke the all-time 3-point record on Tuesday at Madison Square Garden, passing Ray Allen’s mark of 2,973 and solidifying himself as likely the greatest shooter to this point in history.

Along with Curry, LeBron James is on the brink of history this season and will likely become the first player to have 30,000 points, 10,000 rebounds and 10,000 assists in a career. He is also set to pass Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s scoring marks over the course of the next season or two to become the all-time leading scorer in the NBA.

• On top of that, the NFL is fast approaching the playoffs, and 24 teams have at least six wins through week 14. It’s an NFL record and almost every team still has a shot at the post season.

• Both the NFL and NBA have had large surges of COVID-19 among their teams recently, as the Chicago Bulls became the first victims of delayed games due to an outbreak.

Going on a more international approach, the other football (soccer) has had a wild couple weeks of results:

• Messi received his record seventh Ballon d’Or at the end of November for helping lead Argentina to their first international trophy in nearly 30 years.

• The sad news for Argentina is that on Wednesday morning, Sergio Aguero announced his retirement from the sport in general after the discovery of a heart condition that would hinder his career.

Aguero’s legacy will live on in helping win Manchester City the title in 2012 on a last minute goal, being the Premier League’s top non-English goal scorer ever, as well as helping Messi over the summer in the Copa America.

• Another item that may happen according to rumors is a potential delay to the African Cup of Nations, mainly due to protesting European clubs’ desire to keep their players during an important stretch in league seasons.

The club set to lose the most would likely be Liverpool, which would lose top attacking options Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah during a key stretch of a title race between them, Chelsea and Manchester City.

Sports definitely are abundant as we head into the winter seasons, and new storylines are happening every single day, so keep an eye out for top performances and cementing legacies over the coming months.
