Wanted: Local bison skulls

Posted

Throughout September, the Meeteetse Museums is looking to measure the size of bison skulls found in the Big Horn Basin.

The research project is being conducted in honor of Wyoming’s Archaeology Awareness Month.

“Anyone who has found bison crania within the Big Horn Basin can bring it in and we will measure it and tell them how their crania measures up against the competition!” said Amy Phillips, the director of education and programs at the museum.

There is no cost to participate and the skulls can be taken home immediately after museum personnel finish taking measurements and photographing — a process that usually takes 20 to 30 minutes per crania.

With the Meeteetse Museums technically closed to the public at this time, skulls should be brought to the museum’s staff entrance on Meeteetse’s Park Avenue (marked “Office). Museum staff are available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday to Saturday, or citizens can schedule an appointment for another time by emailing programs@meeteetsemuseums.org or calling 307-868-2423.
