Wall of Honor unveiling now set for Oct. 14

The unveiling of Powell’s Wall of Honor has been pushed back by a few weeks, now being scheduled for Oct. 14.

“I know delays are always disappointing,” American Legion Post 26 Trustee Bud Schrickling told the Powell City Council earlier this month.

The project, led by members of American Legion Hughes-Pittinger Post 26, is intended to recognize every veteran who’s lived in the Powell area since 1919. When complete, the wall will list the names of more than 2,200 current or former members of the U.S. Armed Forces, on 150 plaques. Schrickling said about 300 hours went into researching names for the wall, over the course of two years.

The unveiling had been planned for Sept. 9, but the contractor doing the steel fabrication for the memorial is having delays and can’t guarantee they’ll be ready in time for the original date.

“I’m trying to avoid a disaster,” said Schrickling.

The Legion had hoped to unveil the wall on July 4 weekend, but fundraising efforts fell behind schedule. So, it was rescheduled for Labor Day weekend.

After the delay was announced, the group raised about $6,000 — which was $4,000 more than was needed to complete the project.

“It just goes to show you, we have some truly good people in Powell. The people of Powell should be proud,” Schrickling said after the meeting.

The unveiling on Wednesday, Oct. 14, is set for 4 p.m., in front of the American Legion Hall at 143 S. Clark St.
