There’s still more than a month until Powell High School volleyball season begins, but the Panthers got a first look at their 2021 squad on Monday.
The team played a scrimmage against Powell Valley Healthcare employees ahead of the 2021 season, raising money for the Powell Athletic Roundtable amid budget cuts. Head volleyball coach Lesli Spencer called the “Can U Dig It” event a success, as it saw a great turnout and raised $700 in funds for Panther athletes.
“We would like to thank everyone that has supported and continues to support Powell athletics,” Spencer said. “The kids in Powell are blessed by a caring and giving community that they live in, and we appreciate it.”
Before the 2021 campaign kicks off next month, Spencer saw the event as an opportunity to get Panther fans excited for the season.
“Community support is important to the whole program,” she said. “We are all hoping that we can get close to filling the gym this season, and events like this help with that enthusiasm.”
As far as the actual volleyball match, it was a tie. PVHC took the first two sets, while the Panthers struck back in sets three and four to end the match in a 2-2 draw.
After such an unconventional 2020 season due to COVID-19, having the team return to the court in a somewhat normal setting was thrilling for Spencer.
“The best part of the evening was seeing the girls on the floor with everyone that wanted to come,” Spencer said. “Last year was difficult for everyone, and we are hoping to provide some great volleyball that everyone in the community can come and enjoy.”
PVHC employees enjoyed the night as well.
“We had an absolute blast playing the Lady Panthers!” said Marketing Director Jim Cannon. “We hope that it can grow into an annual event for the Roundtable and raise funds to support our local student-athletes.”
The Powell Medical Foundation joined PVHC in hosting Monday’s exhibition.
The Panthers kick off the 2021 campaign on Aug. 27, when they head to Riverton for a tournament. This season will be Spencer’s first as head coach.
