Trapper men’s basketball season starts Saturday

Basketball season has arrived, and the Northwest College men’s team will kick off its regular season Saturday. In what will be NWC’s only home game in November, they’ll take on the Rocky Mountain JV at 3 p.m.

The Trappers are coming into the season with a young team that features only five players with experience in college basketball. However, head coach Jay Collins knows his team has the potential to be dangerous at the end of the year.

The Trappers feature a larger lineup than in years past, bringing in new big men in 6’8” Vladimir Vondra from the Czech Republic and 6’9” Juan Camargo Tellez from Provo, Utah, to anchor the middle of the court.

Throughout the preseason, Collins said he has been impressed with his team’s ability to get better each week and to continue to find things to improve on as they progressed towards their home opener.

The team had a grueling preseason schedule that included seven games, including three against four-year schools in Montana Western, Rocky Mountain College and Montana State University — Northern.

Collins said his team loves to run up and down the court fast, and is hoping they can learn to continue to play at this fast pace while not rushing their decision making.

The team features prominent 3-point shooting, which was streaky at different points of the preseason; Collins knows his team needs to work on being more consistent heading into the season.

After kicking off on Saturday, things will not slow down, as the Trappers head to Western Nebraska on Monday to take on the Cougars at 7:30 p.m. The NWC team will then remain in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and take on an all-star team on Tuesday.

Saturday’s contest against the Rocky JV team is the only home contest scheduled for the Trappers until they take on the Northwest College alumni all-stars on Dec. 10 and 11.
