Thursday proclaimed American Legion Day

The City of Powell is officially recognizing today (Thursday) as “The American Legion Day,” in honor of the 102nd anniversary of the organization’s federal charter.

Congress chartered the Legion on Sept. 16, 1919, based on the four pillars of: veterans affairs and rehabilitation; national security; Americanism; and children and youth.

The organization now boasts more than 2.5 million members, scattered around some 14,000 American Legion posts across the country. That includes Hughes-Pittinger Post 26 in Powell, which was officially chartered on Dec. 23, 1919 and now has 180 local members.

“As one of the original chartered posts we are proud to be a continued service to our fellow veterans, their families and children, and the community of Powell,” said Post Commander Russell Stafford, adding, “with the support and assistance of our Auxiliary and Sons [of the American Legion], we are able to work hard for the betterment of our community.”

Mayor John Wetzel recognized the organization’s many contributions to the Powell community in his recent American Legion Day proclamation.

“Over the years, the American Legion has become a preeminent community-service organization ... working a variety of programs that support the four pillars and benefit our nation’s veterans, its service members, their families, the youth of America and its citizens,” the proclamation reads in part, adding that Legion members “are dedicated to upholding the ideal of freedom and democracy, while working to make a difference in the lives of fellow Americans.”
