Six individual first place finishes and a relay victory helped propel the Powell Panther girls’ swim team to a team victory at the Terry Bartlett Invitational in Cody on Friday — qualifying three more girls for the state meet in the process.

One of the qualifiers and first place victors for the Panthers was freshman Kaitlin Diver, who won the 500 free in a time of 6:05.67 — besting the 3A standard by nearly 15 seconds.

Diver also finished the day as the victor in the 200 free, finishing with a time of 2:15.80.

“Kaitlin [Diver] had big wins and state qualifications in the distance freestyle races,” Panther girls swim coach Bob Smartt said.

Joining her as qualifiers were juniors Aubree Fisher and Baylee Brence. Fisher earned her qualification in the 100 breast with a time of 1:20.37 and Brence earned her qualification in the 500 free with a 6:19.06.

Senior Gabby Paterson was the other Panther who won two events, winning the 50 free with a 26.37 and the 100 breast with a 1:18.22.

Senior Kami Jensen won diving, finishing more than 31 points ahead of the competition with a total score of 195.

Freshman Patricia Christensen was the other event winner for Powell, winning the 100 back with a 1:10.05.

The medley relay team of senior Grace Sapp, Paterson, junior Paige Thomas and freshman Addy Powell won with a time of 2:04.80.

Overall the Panthers finished with 450 points, 106 ahead of second place Cody.

Despite the victory, Smartt said that the Panthers learned a lot from the meet, especially the need to improve in the freestyle relays.

“It was gratifying to win six of the nine individual events, but our free relays need attention,” Smartt said. “The meet provided great feedback that we need to address poor streamlines and turns.”

The Panthers will get two opportunities to improve this week, starting first on Friday in Worland.

That meet will be a quad between Powell, Worland, Sublette County and Buffalo. Smartt said that swimmers will primarily be swimming off events in Worland.

Powell will then turn around and host the Gene Dozah Invite on Saturday, bringing in a majority of 3A competition to the Powell Aquatic Center.

Teams in attendance will be Buffalo, Cody, Green River, Newcastle, Riverton, Sublette County and Worland.

That meet is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start and will pit the Panthers against defending co-state champions Green River in addition to nearly every 3A north opponent.
