Thanksgiving community meal returns to Powell

Posted

The community Thanksgiving meal is a go again this year, which will be welcome news to the hundreds of people who attend the annual Powell event.

A little more than a week before Thanksgiving last year, after much of the planning had taken place, Trinity Bible Church announced that, on the advice of Park County Public Health, it was in the community’s best interest to cancel the meal.

It was a disappointment to many, but at the time, with COVID-19 infections high and before vaccines had been rolled out, it was a necessary decision.

This year, Trinity and other churches are going ahead with plans to serve a meal to around 700 people on Thanksgiving Day.

Serving will begin around 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 25, at the Park County Fairgrounds’ Heart Mountain Center and continue until 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. Donations are always helpful, but the meal is offered for free.

Food can also be delivered to those who can’t eat with the community due to illness or handicap.

Organizers also welcome volunteers to help with everything from cooking, serving, cleaning and setting tables.

Frank Roth, who is helping with the preparations, said it’s an annual tradition for some families to help out with the event.

“They look at it as a family activity. They want to teach their kids about helping people,” Roth said.

Kim Feathers will be among the volunteers delivering meals this year. Feathers said they are expecting to bring 150 to 200 meals to residences, Rocky Mountain Manor, The Heartland, or anyone who needs them.

“It’s such a joy,” she said. “It’s actually the best part of our Thanksgiving to go deliver the meals.”

Deliveries and take-out meals will begin at 10:30 a.m. Organizers encourage folks to not use the take-out or delivery option unless they are unable to attend in person; the overall goal of the community meal is to bring people together, to form connections with others in the community and to bring about a fellowship with the people of Powell, their friends and families.

Sanitizer and masks will be provided in the dining hall for those who require them.

Those who wish to volunteer, have questions or need to have a meal delivered can call 307-271-1138.
