Tennis falls short against Jackson

A Thursday afternoon matchup had the Powell Panthers battling against the visiting Jackson Broncs, as the boys fell just short 3-2 while the girls dropped the matchup 4-1.

BOYS

JACKSON 3, POWELL 2

Continuing the action at home, the Panther boys were looking to get back to winning ways against Jackson after a narrow loss in their previous matchup.

Starting out at No. 1 singles, Nathan Preator continued his undefeated start to the year, defeating Emelyn Baev in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, to move to 5-0 on the season.

“[Preator] came out not feeling the best throughout the week, battling through some sickness,” coach Joe Asay said. “He was eager to get out there and have a match … He’s on a good roll and playing some really good tennis.”

The Broncs got the better of the Panthers at No. 2 singles, as Trevion Solberg fell short against Jayden D’Amoury 2-6, 1-6.

Powell got its second win at No. 1 doubles, as Taeson Schultz and Ryan Barrus cruised against Hunter Bingham and Will Freymann 6-2, 6-1.

Jackson tied the matchup between the two teams 2-2 with a win at No. 2 doubles, as Panthers Isaac Stensing and Alex Watts were defeated by Tin Barden and Finn Benniga 1-6, 4-6.

The Broncs claimed the matchup at No. 3 doubles, when Powell’s Memphis Solberg and Calvin Opps fell short against Jackson’s Max Anderson and Adi Weltzer 3-6, 2-6.

GIRLS

JACKSON 4, POWELL 1

The Powell girls also tried to get back on track against the visitors, but fell short in what proved to be a difficult matchup against the Broncs.

Naomi Whipple got the lone victory for the Panthers at No. 1 singles, defeating Caroline Brokaw in a tight matchup 7-5, 6-4.

“She (Whipple) was down 2-5 in that first set and rattled off a few games to win that first set,” Asay said. “Found herself in that same situation in set two (up 5-2), she finally got that done and was able to get that last game won … A good win for her.”

At No. 2 singles, Sophie Czirr dropped her match to Rosey Jones 2-6, 0-6.

Kyra Morrow and Anneliese Peterson also dropped their match at No. 1 doubles to Cake Mercury and Lucy Webb 0-6, 2-6.

No. 2 doubles also went to Jackson, with Isabelle Urbach and Elaina Kousoulos falling short against Sadie Scarlett and Annabel Millham 1-6, 4-6.

Finally at No. 3 doubles, Bailee Allred and Ava Stearns fell short against Harper Mayer and Sarah Hornan 4-6, 1-6.

MATCHES CONTINUE

The home slate for the Panthers continued on Saturday against Sheridan. Those match results were determined after the press deadline.

Powell now gears up to take on Park County rival Cody at 3 p.m. today (Tuesday) at Powell High School in the first meeting of the teams this season.

“They’re (Cody) always getting out and competing and continuing to improve their game,” Asay said. “These kids know each other’s games so it’ll be fun to see how they play and respond.”
