The Meeteetse Museums’ annual tour of the Double Dee Ranch is going virtual this year. On Saturday, all events will be streamed on Zoom and the Meeteetse Museums Facebook page.
To start the day, participants can join with their morning coffee at 9 a.m. to learn about the history of log cabins in North America from Andrew Belonsky. He is the author of “The Log Cabin: An Illustrated History.”
At 10:30 a.m., there will be a presentation on Amelia Earhart and her connection to Wyoming. The famous aviatrix visited the ranch in 1934 and was so in love with the Absarokas, she wanted to have a cabin built. When Earhart’s plane disappeared over the Pacific Ocean in 1937, the building was halted.
For the presentation, museum executive director David Cunningham will give insight into Earhart’s life. Throughout the presentation, appearances by “Amelia” will transport guests to the Double Dee at the time of her 1934 visit. The living history presentations are supported by the Wyoming Arts Council.
The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.
The last presentation of the day will be at 3 p.m. as Russell True talks on the history of dude ranching in Wyoming. True is the owner of the White Stallion dude ranch in Tucson, Arizona, and the two-time president of the Dude Ranching Association. He is also co-author of the book “History of Dude Ranching in Wyoming” set to release at the end of the month.
If you want to visit the ranch on your own, the Meeteetse Museums now has a virtual tour you can download before you go. The tour features historic photos, oral histories, and descriptions of the buildings at the ranch. For more information, call the Meeteetse Museums at 307-868-2423, visit the museums’ page on Facebook or email programs@meeteetsemuseums.org. The museums’ website is currently being redone and is not up-to-date.
