A new Wyoming nonprofit, Travel for Purpose, is presenting a movie event at Big Horn Cinemas in Cody as a kick-off.
The film, Surfers and Cowboys, will be shown at 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 1 and at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 2. The screenings will include a special musical performance, a raffle and a Q&A with both the producer of the film, Bryan Jennings, and the director of Travel for Purpose.
Travel for Purpose, which is based in Cody, aims to train people to “walk in the full weight of their identity in Christ” and to encourage them “to spread the Gospel in the great outdoors.”
As for the Surfers and Cowboys, the documentary chronicles the budding friendship between Jennings and professional bull riders Thad Newell, Jake Nelson and Zane Cook. Jennings, who is a pro surfer, shares his passion for surfing with the young men, who in turn share their love of the rodeo life.
Later, Jennings invites the three bull riders to come to Hawaii and meet some of the best pro surfers in the world at the Billabong Pipeline Pro. Three surfers take the three bull riders out to surf, and in turn are seated on some bulls at a local ranch.
The point Jennings is making is that whether riding a bull or a board, it is vital to live by faith and not by sight, while unveiling the depths of the professionals’ endurance, commitment and faith.
The film was made in the hopes that bull riders and the rodeo industry would have a movie similar to other Walking on Water films to show at events, in their homes and at outreach events and share the gospel through the life stories of these professionals.
