Even though school has been out of session less than a week, the summer school staff is in place and ready to go when most of those programs open in July. 

Summer school elementary staff includes Chris Wolff as principal and Brandy Wetherbee as administrative assistant. Sylvia Garcia will serve as an English language learner paraeducator. Darci Ostermiller will be a kindergarten teacher, and Julie Stingley will be her paraprofessional. Merceded McCament will serve as a paraprofessional in the kindergarten class of Jeanie Sanders. First grade will team Shelby Randall with Shyann Baxter as teacher and paraprofessional, respectively and Missy Gernhardt will have Tawny Hall as her first grade paraeducator. 

In the second grade, Amanda Haney will be a teacher, as will Janette Reihm. They will be supported by Tammy Schiermeister and Stephanie Diver. There will also be two third grade classes, with Michelle Giltner and Pat D’Alessandro at the helm, with Beth McCaslin and Hans Hawley supporting those classes as paraprofessionals. Elementary classes are only for kindergarten through third grade and will run from July 6-29.

There will be no middle school summer classes this year, according to school district staff.

On the high school side, Tracy McArthur will coordinate the programs, while Cathy McKenzie and Troy Hildebrand will teach math. Amy Moore and Scott McKenzie will teach English. Nate Urbach will head the social studies class and Leon Miller and Kaitlin Loeffen will handle science. Wendy Smith will teach a third science class if needed and Shelley Heny will field the online classes. Those classes also run from July 6-29 and are intended for credit recovery purposes.

Special education isn’t left out of the summer mix, either.

Christy Stenerson will be at Westside and Powell High School as a special education teacher for kindergarten through third grade and high school. Maxie Lynn will serve as a paraeducator at Westside, as will Edna Snyder. Virgie Mattis will be a paraeducator at the high school working with students seeking credit recovery. Extended school year, as the special education program is called, began June 2 and will run until Aug. 13. Whether a student is part of the ESY is dependent on their individualized service plan, which, as the name indicates, is built to support each student individually.

Getting the schools ready to resume classes in August is on the radar as well.

Delia Carbajal, Katie Griffin, Garret Hall, Mitch Sleep, Luke Condie and Hailey Bott will serve as adult members of the consolidated cleaning crew while Sydney Legler, Logan Brown, Samantha Rivas and Augustus Miller are student workers. The crew will focus on team project cleaning, with the teams being organized and led by a building custodian, wrote Rob McCray, coordinator of support services for the district. 

The first day of the 2021-22 school year for students is Aug. 24.
