Still hope of a spring sports season, AD says

Efforts aimed at curtailing the new coronavirus have derailed the spring sports season for local athletes indefinitely, but hope remains that games may still be played.

“As coaches, we’re not giving up. We’re hoping for a skosh of a season,” Powell High School Activities Director Scott McKenzie said Thursday and reaffirmed Tuesday. “But we’ll just have to wait and see.”

The situation continues to change rapidly. On Friday, Gov. Mark Gordon directed Wyoming’s schools to remain closed to students through Friday, April 17, with preparations now being made for remote teaching.

Following the lead of state officials, the Wyoming High School Activities Association announced Saturday that it was suspending all activities and practices through Monday, April 20.

“Due to the continuing influence of COVID-19 we are not able to predict when it will be safe to resume spring sports,” the WHSAA said, adding that, “We will be reconvening the WHSAA Board of Directors to have further discussions on this matter as well as requesting input from our member schools.”

McKenzie said that at PHS, “we’d like to get our spring sports going if possible” and that he’s holding out hope for a partial season.

While Powell Middle School has a fairly short spring schedule, McKenzie said the high school schedule is long enough that, hypothetically, “we could still pull off a May season” if schools were to remain closed through April.

McKenzie added that, as the district helps teachers and students prepare for potential online classes, he’s been spending more time as an instructional facilitator than as activities director.

“It’s such a crazy time,” he said Thursday.
